The Original 1950 Knee Hugger Pixie Elf History ~ PHOTOS

When I was 2 years old my parents bought several RARE Aqua Blue Angel Hair Pixie Knee Hugger Elf's for my twin sister, older sister and brother in the 1950's and more in the 1960's.  Since then I have kept my Pixie Elf and have put her on my Christmas tree every year.  My twin sister has the green striped Pixie Elf and I have the pink striped Pixie Elf.
21st Century Elf on a Shelf Highly sought after 2014

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is a 2005 children's picture book, written and self-published by American author Carol Aebersold and daughter Chanda Bell, and illustrated by Coë Steinwart. The book tells a Christmas-themed story, written in rhyme, that explains how Santa Claus knows who is naughty and who is nice, and describes elves visiting children between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, after which they return to the North Pole until the next holiday season. The Elf on the Shelfcomes in a keepsake box that features a hardbound picture book and a small soft toy in the form of a pixie scout elf.

The story describes how Santa's "scout elves" hide in people's homes to watch over events. Once everyone goes to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place throughout the day. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning around the house, the scout elf and the family play an on-going game of hide and seek.

My original 1950 Elf head is made from plastic, and the clothing is felt and cotton material. She has a string to hang on the tree. She is 4.5 inches tall in the sitting position and 8 inches long when stretched out. She has a baby face and the elf outfit and hat are felt and her hair is Aqua Blue Angel Hair with a small mole on the face.  Mint Condition with Marked Japan on back. My twin sister has the other Elf, but her's is green and white striped.
My RARE Aqua Blue Angel Hair Pixie Knee Hugger Elf 1960 from my childhood
"Knee-hugger elves are Christmas novelty toys that were mass-produced in US occupied Japan during the 1950-1960s. As made evident by their nostalgic popularity on eBayPinterest, and Etsy, they define a key aspect of the Christmas experience for middle to lower class Americans who grew up during the 1960s. Today, knee-hugger elves are popular again due to the success of the book, the Elf on the Shelf, written in 2005 by Carol Aebersold and daughter Chanda Bell and illustrated by Coë Steinwart. The values, design, and experience of both vintage and contemporary knee-hugger elves tell us something about processes of globalization  class, multi-culturalism, and the secularization of Christmas."
